An Operation Theatre is a facility within a hospital where surgical operations are carried out in a sterile environment. Within each surgical specialty there is a team comprising of theatre staff, operating department practitioners, nurses and theatre assistants all of them are also supported by the sterile services staff, theatre porters and theatre administrators. These support teams work closely with the surgeons and anesthetists to ensure the best possible quality of care for patients.
There is also a close working relationship with the critical care complex which is situated in the theatre area for those patients requiring intensive care post-operation. This unit has a separate team of specialist nurses and anesthetists.
